HP fails to spark market 21 November 2007
Though Hewlett-Packard kicked off the week reporting a quarterly profit, concern about the U.S. economy kept markets in turmoil before the Thanksgiving holiday Thursday, dragging down shares of technology bellwethers like Microsoft, AMD, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index.Though HP's quarterly report capped a generally strong earnings season for IT vendors, investors are nervously braced for news of sales in the fourth quarter. Rising oil prices and continuing problems in the housing market are fueling worries that economic conditions will dampen both consumer and business IT spending.Just before Thanksgiving, the Mortgage Bankers Association said that mortgage application volume fell by almost 3.6 percent last week. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 2562, down 24.66 points on Wednesday, before the holiday break. While economic fears caused the Nasdaq to slump in the third quarter, IT vendors ended up posting strong sales, sending IT share prices back up during October.HP's financial report, released Monday, showed that strong sales of OpenView and Mercury IT management and middleware software helped fuel net earnings of $2.3 billion, compared to net income of $1.9 billion one year earlier. Earnings beat estimates of analysts polled by Thomson Financial, who forecast net income of $2.184 billion. What's more, HP's forecast for revenue for the current quarter and fiscal year also surpassed analyst forecasts. The upbeat report on business products and bullish earnings outlook gave HP shares only a temporary boost. HP shares rose by $0.12 Tuesday to close at $49.56, but then slipped back Wednesday, along with most other tech shares, to close at $48.88.High-flying Google, whose dominance in the Internet advertising market continues to attract IT investors, was one of the few bellwethers to avoid a decline before the break, closing Wednesday at $660.52, up by $11.98.But economic jitters affected companies, including Microsoft, which closed at $34.23 Wednesday, down by $0.35, and AMD, which lost $0.45 to close at $10.83. The share price declines come even though AMD said it expects a strong fourth quarter and as analysts see strengths on both the business and consumer sides for Microsoft."In an environment where IT spending questions persist for 2008, Microsoft may be a solid defensive holding given its consumer exposure and strong product cycle," according to a research note from Citigroup Global Markets Equity Research. As IT investors brace for the first revenue reports for the fourth quarter, the traditional holiday buying season kicking off after Thanksgiving will be closely watched.

'Lust' virus: Film fans in China hit with virus attack 20 November 2007
Lust seems to be prevailing over caution for computer users in China who download certain unauthorized copies of Ang Lee's latest film: some of them are receiving dozens of viruses instead.Because " Lust, Caution " was released in China with about 30 minutes of footage censored by the local film overseer -- almost all of it depicting graphic sex -- movie audiences here are turning to unauthorized downloads of the film to see what they missed. However, hackers are replacing what appear to be copies of the film with software that infects end users' computers, according to a warning from antivirus software maker Beijing Rising International Software.Rising's antivirus software first flagged the problem on Friday or Saturday, said spokeswoman Li Ting. Rising estimates that about 15 percent of the copies of "Lust, Caution" available online would supply frustration rather than titillation, causing a blue screen to appear on the user's computer and possibly stealing passwords for Web sites and instant messaging programs.Rising has designated the "Lust" virus as Trojan.Win32.Mnless.zgw. This type of attack is on the rise against users downloading entertainment content, including movies, music, and photos of film and pop stars, the company said. Rising offers a fix via its Chinese Web site. Some users are downloading "dozens" of viruses, according to Gao Yiwei, a product manager with Kaspersky Lab in China. Not all users are getting the same thing: some receive only Trojan horse software, while others receive both the film and various viruses. Kaspersky's software now protects against the viruses, Gao said, but he wouldn't confirm when they first appeared or when the software update occurred.A representative for another antivirus software company, Trend Micro, said she would pass the information on to technical support and would "fix this problem soon in China."Unauthorized downloading of films is common in China, part of a large piracy problem that affects both the entertainment and software industries. Organizations like the Business Software Alliance (BSA) regularly point out that pirated software can contain viruses or be more vulnerable to attacks. The Motion Picture Association -- Hollywood's overseas lobbying body -- estimates that illegal reproduction and unauthorized downloads of films caused the film industry to miss out on $2.7 billion in potential revenue in China in 2005.

GSM group backs LTE for mobile broadband 15 November 2007
The board of the GSM Association voted to back LTE (Long-Term Evolution) as the mobile broadband standard to succeed HSPA (High-Speed Packet Access), the CEO of the group said Tuesday. The vote is an indication that GSM operators are unified in their support for LTE, and gives them a united front as LTE competes with Qualcomm's UMB (Ultra Mobile Broadband) and with WiMax, backed by the computer industry, to become the next mobile broadband technology.LTE is several times faster than HSPA and could help spur demand for more downloading over cellular networks. Japan's NTT DoCoMo may become the first operator to widely deploy the new technology, which is expected to be ready by the end of this decade.LTE is now part of the GSMA push to promote the use of mobile broadband on cellular networks.Rob Conway, CEO of GSMA, announced the association's backing of LTE during a speech at the GSM Association's Mobile Asia Congress in Macau, China, and called on the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the leading United Nations agency for communication technologies, to ensure the industry wins the spectrum needed to offer mobile broadband.GSMA said it will work with other companies and organizations developing LTE technology, and start working with the NGMN (Next Generation Mobile Networks) initiative.NTT DoCoMo is pushing aggressively ahead with plans to speed up its mobile broadband services in Japan, and is looking to LTE to take care of the job. The company counts over half of Japan's mobile subscribers as its customers and has already started running tests on LTE technology to become its "Super 3G" offering. One advantage to LTE is that it can be used on existing 3G networks.Download speeds on Super 3G could reach up to 300Mbps (megabits per second), Masao Nakamura, the CEO of NTT DoCoMo, said in a speech, a huge improvement over HSDPA. A 500-page magazine, for example, takes 3 minutes to download on HSDPA. On Super 3G it takes only three seconds, he said. That means people will be able to download larger file sizes, including videos, music, and more over their mobile phones.A problem for NTT could ultimately be government allocation of the radio spectrum that operators need to deliver wireless broadband. There may not be enough bandwidth available on some of the spectrum the Japanese government is considering for mobile network operators, said K. Jay Miyahara, corporate chief engineer of the mobile network operations unit at NEC."What technology [DoCoMo] ultimately uses depends on the spectrum they get," he said. Certain technologies, including HSPA and LTE, can be used only in certain spectrum. The 800MHz spectrum would be ideal, but most Japanese companies expect to be allocated 700MHz, Miyahara said.DoCoMo hopes to attract users by allowing them to pay a flat rate for speedy downloads. "We want people to use their mobile phone for everything, but we think that if they worry too much about their bill then they won't use this download feature," Miyahara said. "So the answer is to offer a flat rate service, and then people won't worry about their phone bill."NTT DoCoMo is Japan's largest mobile phone service provider, with 53.7 percent of the nation's 99 million mobile users subscribing to the company. Nearly 80 percent of DoCoMo subscribers have already switched to 3G (third generation mobile telecommunications) service from 2G, Nakamura said. The nation is considered a world leader in 3G and mobile phone services.DoCoMo is also researching 4G (fourth generation) mobile technology. When it's commercialized, 4G will promise 1Gbps download speeds, said Nakamura, but in testing DoCoMo has achieved speeds as high as 5Gbps.Testing on LTE is expected to be finished by 2009, said Matthias Reis, head of the LTE business program at Nokia Siemens Networks. Operators are currently using HSPA, and starting to roll out HSPA+ and IHSPA (Internet-HSPA). By 2009, testing will be done and operators will be able to start rolling out the technology, he said.Meanwhile the GSMA continues to back current generation wireless technologies. Separately Tuesday, in partnership with Microsoft, it announced a contest to design laptop PCs with HSPA-enabled chipsets to make it easier for the average user to access the Internet via a mobile network. The hope is that users will begin to use mobile phone networks to download information to more devices other than just handsets, such as laptops, digital cameras, digital music players, and more.

Pharmacy software vendors embrace e-prescribing 13 November 2007
Thirteen U.S. pharmacy software vendors have voiced support for electronic prescribing efforts, each committing to a formal campaign to educate pharmacists on the benefits of e-prescribing, an operator of an electronic network announced Tuesday. The pharmacy software vendors will help their customers connect to the Pharmacy Health Information Exchange, a nationwide e-prescribing network that links doctors and pharmacists, said SureScripts, the company that operates the network.Among the software vendors that have signed on are Best Computer Systems, CarePoint, Computer-Rx, Data Doc, Health Business Systems, and Rx30 Pharmacy Management System, SureScripts said in a news release.E-prescribing can improve patient compliance and safety as well as increase the time spent with patients, Stuart Trooskin, CEO of Data Doc, said in a statement.SureScripts also announced the results of a study showing an increase in prescriptions being filled after doctors began e-prescribing. The company's research found an 11 percent increase after doctors began using e-prescribing services. The 19-month study, conducted by SureScripts and Walgreens, looked at more than 1 million prescriptions and tracked 100 doctors using e-prescribing tools.More research is needed to tell how electronic prescribing causes more prescriptions to be received by pharmacies and picked up by patients, SureScripts said. But the study does suggest that e-prescribing can cut down on prescription "leakage" -- those that never make it to the pharmacy to be filled.Getting more prescriptions into the hands of patients "is a benefit to us all," Bruce Roberts, executive vice president and CEO of the National Community Pharmacists Association, said in a statement. While e-prescribing has long been viewed as a way of cutting down on prescription errors, the study suggests other benefits, he added.More than 95 percent of U.S. pharmacies have computer systems that have been certified for a connection to the Pharmacy Health Information Exchange and more than two-thirds are live on the network, according to SureScripts.
